Margin vs markup

Profit = selling − cost. Margin % = profit ÷ selling × 100 (profit as a share of the selling price). Markup % = profit ÷ cost × 100 (profit as a share of the cost). For the same profit, markup is always the bigger number — e.g. a ₹500 profit on ₹1000 cost is a 50% markup but a 33.33% margin.
