How TDS works

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is tax the payer deducts before paying you. TDS = amount × rate ÷ 100, and you receive the balance. The rate depends on the section. TDS applies only above each section's threshold, and if you don't provide a PAN, it jumps to 20% (Section 206AA). Excess TDS can be claimed back as a refund when you file your ITR.

FAQs

How is TDS calculated?

TDS = amount × rate ÷ 100. The rate depends on the section (e.g. 10% for 194A interest, 2% for 194H commission, 10% for 194J professional fees).

What if PAN is not given?

TDS jumps to 20% under Section 206AA regardless of the normal rate.

When is TDS not deducted?

If the payment is below the section threshold, or you submit Form 15G/15H declaring income below the taxable limit.
